The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is happy to note that the
Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has
included Wrestling in a short list of three Olympic sports to be voted
on in September 2013 by the wider membership. The International Olympic
Committee’s executive board placed wrestling, squash and
baseball/softball on a short list of sports from which only one will be
chosen for inclusion in the 2020 Games.
The Ministry expressed the hope that wrestling will return to the Olympic Roster after the September meeting of the IOC.
The Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Shri Jitendra Singh discussed the issue of restoring wrestling in the Olympic movement with IOC on 15th May 2013 at Lausanne, Switzerland.
Earlier in his letter to Mr. Jacques Rogge, President, IOC, in February, 2013, Shri Jitendra Singh had highlighted that Wrestling has immense popularity and fan-following worldwide and that 71 countries participated in the Wrestling event in London Olympics to full houses.
