2004-05 for the month of March 2013 have been released by the Central Statistics Off ice
of the Ministry
of Statistics and
Programme
Implementation. IIP is compiled using data received
from 16 source agencies viz. Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP); Indian Bureau of Mines; Central Electricity Authority; Joint Plant Committee; Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas; Office of Textile Commissioner ;
Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals; Directorate of Sugar;
Department of Fertilizers; Directorate of Vanaspati, Vegetable Oils & Fats;
Tea Board;
Office of Jute
Commissioner; Office of Coal
Controller; Railway Board ;
Office of Salt
Commissioner and Coffee
Board.

The General In dex
for the month of March 2013 stands at 192.3, which is 2.5% higher as compared to the level in the month of March
2012. The cumulative
growth for
the period
April-March 2012-13 over
the corresponding
period of the previous year
stands at 1.0%.

The Indices of Industrial
Production
for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for
the month of
March 2013 stand
at 145.3, 205.0
and 164.2 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates
of (-) 2.9%, 3.2% and 3.5% as compared
to March 2012 (Statement I). The cumulative growth in the three sectors during
April-March 2012-13 over the corresponding period of 2011-12 has been (-) 2.5%,
1.2% and 4.0% respectively.

In term s of indu stries, ten (10) out of the twenty two (22) industry group s (as
per
2-digit NIC-2004) in the manufact uring secto r
have shown positive growth during the mon th
of March 2013 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year (Stat ement II). The industry group
‘Wearing apparel ;
dressing
and dyeing of
fur’ has shown the highest
positive growth of 152.3%, followed by
64.6% in ‘Electrical
machinery and apparat us n.e.c.’ and 37.7% in
‘Medical, precision
& optical
instrument s,
watches and clocks’. On the other
hand, the industry group ‘Publishing, printing and reproduction of recorded media’ has shown a
negative growth
of 23.2% followed by 22.0% in ‘Office, accounting & computing machinery’
and 11.4% in both ‘Fabricated metal products, except machinery & equipment’
and ‘Other transport equipment’.

As per Use-based
classification, the growth
rates in March 2013 over March 2012 are 2.6% in Basic goods, 6.9% in Capital goods and (-) 0.2% in Inter mediate goods (Statement
III). The Consumer durables and Consumer
non-durables have recorded growth of (-) 4.5% and 6.5% respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer
goods being 1.6%.
6. Some of the important items showin g high positive growth during the current month over the same month in previous year include ‘Cigarettes’
(28.4%), ‘Woollen Carpets’ (83.1%), ‘Apparels’ (175.0%), ‘Leather Garments’
(49.9%), ‘Fuel, Aviation Turbine’ (33.1%), ‘Propylene’ (29.6%), ‘Ethylene’
(40.3%), ‘Air Conditioner (Room)’ (37.9%), ‘Conductor, Aluminium’ (45.0%) and
‘Cable, Rubber
Insulated’ (247.3%).
7. Some
of the other important items showing high negative growth are: ‘Synthetic Yarn’
[(-) 24.8%], ‘Terry Towel’ [(-) 22.9%], ‘Razor Blades/ Safety Blades’ [(-)
29.4%], ‘Fasteners’ [(-) 27.2%], ‘Heat
Exchangers’ [(-) 27.2%], ‘Sugar Machinery’ [(-) 64.6%], ‘Plastic Machinery Incl.
Moulding Machinery’ [(-) 22.5%] and ‘Ship Building & Repairs’ [(-) 30.3%].

Along with the Q.E. of IIP for
the month of
March 2013, the in dices
for February 2013 have
undergone the first
revision and those for December 2012 have
undergone the fina l revision
in the light
of the updated data
received from the source agencies. It may be noted that these revised indices (first
revision) in respect
of February 2013 shall undergo final (second) revision along with the release of IIP for the month
of May 2013.
